Rabbit Island Hike

Kamloops Trails Posted on 2026-03-15 by dsmith2026-03-18
Rabbit

At the end of February on a cool and sunny day I hiked from McArthur Island down to the beach area, then waded across the river channel to Rabbit Island.    I wore a dry suit and neoprene boots and the water depth was about mid-thigh with a current, but I used a pole for stability and crossed quickly.    I then went across the sandy beaches to a pile of logs under the cottonwoods.    I removed my dry suit and boots and left them to dry while I hiked clockwise around the island.

The north side is all on the beaches and the south side is on a grassy bench above steep sandy slopes down to the river.   There are game trails through the middle of the island, but for this day, I hiked the perimeter.     The center of the island has open meadows with salt-tolerant grasses and cottonwoods.    A small number of pine trees stand on the highest areas.    During freshet the island is cut with flooded channels.   At the southwest corner, there was still ice on the river, as it flowed down to Kamloops Lake.

The hike is 4.7 km, but it takes about two hours with wading both ways, changing gear, walking through the grasses, and exploring.   This is a hike I do every year.    The next time I will be on Rabbit Island will be by kayak in the summer.

Some photos from the hike are shared here (with captions) in a Google Photos Album (link) – Rabbit Island in Winter

The album is also shared here as a slideshow (no captions):

Thompson River Estuary Hike

Kamloops Trails Posted on 2026-03-09 by dsmith2026-02-22 1

On a grey day with a chance of rain in fourth week of February, I drove to Tranquille and parked at the gate.    I then took a rough path down to the wetlands area and wound my way out to the Estuary area.    From there I followed the shoreline downstream, sometimes hiking on the shoreline, sometimes, crossing channels at narrow spots, sometimes on sand-silt islands, and sometimes on rocky beaches.   The route was out to the sandy point where Cooney Bay starts, then back on the road. Various channels wind down from the hills to the river, but there are usually a way to the other side at narrows. This is a scenic route.    There is no … Continue reading →

Downriver in Winter

Kamloops Trails Posted on 2026-02-25 by dsmith2026-02-19
downriver in February

Mild winter weather arrived in February and the rivers became ice-free.     Paddlers can venture onto the water if the temperature is above + 3 and there is no wind.    Since the water is very cold still, we need to wear protective gear.     Neoprene boots and gloves and a dry suit protects the kayaker from cold conditions wading at launch and landing, and sitting in the boat while paddling.   Although a spill is unlikely, a dry suit and a PFD are the best safety measures.    The extra gear takes a bit longer to load and launch and reload again, but if the conditions are good, it is all worth the effort. On a pleasant morning with some … Continue reading →

Hiking the Winter Beaches – The Confluence

Kamloops Trails Posted on 2026-02-07 by dsmith2026-02-07

When trail conditions in the hills becomes too muddy, slushy, or icy, hiking at the bottom of the valley is much more appealing.    Routes on gravel, sand, or pavement will leave our boots dry and the risk of slips/falls is greatly reduced.   Many walkers use the paved sections of the Rivers Trail and McArthur Island.    Another choice for hikers is to hike the winter beaches – Airport Beach, West Beaches, the Confluence Beach, Mission Flats Beach, the dike and beach in Westsyde, Cooney Bay, and other riverside routes.    On a mild mid-winter day I chose to hike the Confluence Loop from Overlander Park.    This is a 3.1 km route taking about an hour. There was no … Continue reading →

Mission Flats Winter Beach Hike

Kamloops Trails Posted on 2025-12-27 by dsmith2025-12-13

When we have milder temperatures near the start of winter, then again in late winter, the snow in the valley bottom melts.    The sandy-silty shoreline is quite porous so the meltwater does not result in mud.    There are a number of winter beach hikes along the shores of the Thompson River, the South Thompson River, and the North Thompson River to enjoy.     One of the the hikes is along the beaches of Mission Flats on the south side of the Thompson River.    The beaches are widest near the mill, but we usually start our hike closer to the Waste Disposal area, at the west end of the beaches.    We hiked there twice doing different routes.  … Continue reading →

Kayaking Kamloops Lake from Savona

Kamloops Trails Posted on 2025-04-03 by dsmith2025-08-09

At the end of March, the weather was cool, windy and rainy, but I drove to Savona and parked at the boat launch at the end of Tingley Street (down from the Community Hall, Library, and School).   The launch area was in good shape for unloading, parking, and launching, but the winds were stronger than expected, coming down the lake from the northeast.    I chose to paddle through some sheltered bays and down to the lake outlet, then a short paddle up the north shore of Kamloops Lake, and back. For the first two-thirds of the paddle, I kept my eye on the waves, rolling across the hull as I went to the west end of lake, past Steelhead … Continue reading →

Five Bridges and Two Otters

Kamloops Trails Posted on 2025-04-01 by dsmith2025-08-09 1

On a grey mild morning I launched my kayak from Pioneer Park then paddled down the South Thompson River.    I passed under the “Ghost Bridge”, the burnt and now removed Red Bridge,  and then continued down to two standing bridges and two other former (ghost) bridges.    There are a number of pylons just below the surface near the base of the stanchions on the CN Bridge so it’s best to stay midway between the pillars.   I continued downstream past Riverside Park, then under the Overlanders Bridge. Farther west I passed the stanchions of the Black Bridge, built in 1925, but abandoned and removed in the late 1960’s – early 1970’s. An older bridge yet was the White Bridge, … Continue reading →

Rabbit Island Ramble

Kamloops Trails Posted on 2025-03-02 by dsmith2025-08-09

On the first day of March I hiked from McArthur Island over to Rabbit Island.    In late winter the ice clears off and a narrow channel separates the beaches of the two islands.    Since I have done this route many times, I knew what to expect.    The route is to hike over from the corner of McArthur Island onto wet beaches.    I had already put on a dry suit and neoprene boots and I had my hiking boots in a dry bag.   The narrowest part of a river channel is about 12 m across.   I waded through the cold moving water.   The deepest water came up to my knees, but since the water is quite cold. … Continue reading →

Hiking the West Beaches

Kamloops Trails Posted on 2025-02-27 by dsmith2025-02-27

On a mild end-of-February day we started a hike at the end of Aviation Way to go out to the West Beaches.    The route starts on the Rivers Trail, but we stayed on the narrower trail which follows the river downstream and out toward the Thompson River Estuary, looping back along the river for a 8 km, 2+ hour hike, much of it on the sand. A single track trail winds through the cottonwoods above the floodlands, bearing west. A single track drops down into a dry slough, following a single track past an old vehicle graveyard, sometimes called Dale’s Antique Beach. We emerged to the beach shoreline, then wound through the red-osier dogwood to the beach.   We went … Continue reading →

Hiking the Estuary

Kamloops Trails Posted on 2025-02-24 by dsmith2025-02-23
estuary

By the end of February a route that I try to hike is from the entrance area to Tranquille down to the shoreline where streams flow into the river, then along the rivershore toward Cooney Bay.    The whole area floods in late spring, but it is a wide estuary in the other seasons.   Conditions are wet after snowmelt, but we can pick our way downstream to get to a gravel beach. There are several streams which flow from the hills down to the river.    A faint trail heads southwest toward the wider estuary. We can follow the shoreline of the river, which braids out into several channels between silt islands, some still with ice. The beaches become wider … Continue reading →
