Rattler Viewpoint Hike

Kamloops Trails Posted on 2025-09-06 by dsmith2025-09-06
Rattler Viewpoint Hike

On previous hikes this summer I hiked over two of the Stake Lake Hills.     First, the Lac le Jeune Lookout (Vista Trail) was hiked from Lac le Jeune.     In the middle of summer, it was a loop route over McConnell Hill.     On this recent day, the hike was through different cross-country and snowshoe trails to the top of the hill Rattler Viewpoint.   The fastest route up was around the west side of Stake Lake (Cartwheel Trail), then up Hold Up.   A sign shows the way to a snowshoe trail which winds through the forest and up the hill.

Most of the area around Rattler Viewpoint is douglas fir forest.

From the viewpoint there are views to the west side of Lac le Jeune, up Chuwhels Mountain and Stake Lake to the north.   This rocky hill has cliffs of basalt columns on the west side.

On the loop route back I followed an off-piste ski trail, then a series of cross country trails back to the start for a two hour hike, mostly before the heat of the day.

We could hike a different route in the Stake Lake Trail system every day for the whole summer, so we will be back to hike another route this summer and fall.

McConnell Hill Hike

Kamloops Trails Posted on 2025-08-05 by dsmith2025-07-29
McConnell Hill Hike

One of the hikes to be done each summer is a route that goes over McConnell Hill.    There are a number of ski trails, snowshoe trails, and even cross-country bike trails that can be combined to go up and over McConnell Hill.   Each year the route is changed.    This year the route started at Stake Lake, then followed cross country trails up to the basalt bluffs area, and onto a single track snowshoe trail up to the top of the hill/mesa. The day was hot and there was no wind on Stake Lake as I hiked by. The snowshoe trail is a bit rough and at one point near the top, it passes under a wooden archway. At … Continue reading →

Spruce Canyon Stomp

Kamloops Trails Posted on 2025-01-30 by dsmith2025-08-09
Spruce Canyon Stomp

On a weekday in January I snowshoed the Stake Lake Trails.    It was a busy day with school groups and many cross country skiers enjoying the sunny, cool day.    I opted to snowshoe an out-of-the-way loop route.    First I went around the lakeshore on the Lake Snowshoe Trail to the far end of the lake. Some blue skies and intermittent clouds made the ice-and-snow-covered lake bright as I followed a well-stomped-in trail bearing south. I followed the Stadium Trail then the Cow(an) Creek Trail along the riparian areas of the stream-swamp and through the lodgepole pines. I crossed the ski trail and started up the Spruce Canyon Trail, winding up the deep gully. Above the canyon on … Continue reading →
