Clay Lake on the Snow

Kamloops Trails Posted on 2026-01-08 by dsmith2025-12-30

Near the end of December right before the more snow blanketed the hills, I went for a hike in the upper grasslands near McQueen Lake.   The route went into the forest on the edge of the McQueen Lake property, then around the end of Clay Lake, then looped through the forest and back through the grasslands.    I had hiked in the area another time not long before so both routes are shown here.

Clay Lake was frozen and topped with a layer of snow.

It was quiet in the area and there were very few footprints, except for deer tracks crossing my route.   Since I knew the area well, i visited 3 different homesteads, now abandoned for over 100 years.    I chose to include a route past an upland pond, a grove of mature Douglas fir trees, and some tall trees on the edge of the grasslands.   Some photos from that hike are shared here in a Google Photos album.    A link is provided here with captions added for each photo – Clay Lake on the Snow.

Also shared here are the photos in a slideshow:

This will be a spot to snowshoe once there is enough snow, usually in February.

Griffin Lake with a Folding Kayak

Kamloops Trails Posted on 2025-05-13 by dsmith2025-08-09

In early May I drove up the Lac du Bois Road then turned onto the Isobel Lake Road and parked just off the roadside.    I had my folding kayak in a large backpack so I gathered my gear and then hiked to the marshy shoreline of Griffin Lake.   I had paddled the lake once before, hauling my kayak through the woods and into the lake, on rough ground, but this was the first time with a folding kayak. The distance from the truck to the marshy launch area was only about 150m, an easy hike with the boat on my back.    The boat (Oru Inlet) unfolds like an origami puzzle and then it has clips to hold the … Continue reading →

Clapperton Ridge Snowshoe

Kamloops Trails Posted on 2025-02-15 by dsmith2025-02-14

By mid-February the colder temperatures gave way to better conditions for outdoor activities.    I drove north through Lac du Bois Provincial Park to the upper end of the grasslands just south of McQueen Lake.     I snowshoed an old cart track through an open bowl, then a forested section (douglas fir and aspens), to the open grasslands of the Lac du Bois Conservation Area.    My goal for the day was to get to a viewpoint on the southwest side of Clapperton Hill. The winter sun shone bright through thin clouds as I followed stomped-in tracks to the ridge. I crested the ridge and stopped to enjoy views over the grasslands, to Mount Mara, and over to Wheeler Mountain. … Continue reading →
