Gus Johnson Trail

On a cool day at the end of September, we hiked around Lac le Jeune.    We started at the campground beach and hiked clockwise along the shoreline trail, along the Lac le Jeune East Road to the Rossmoore Forest Service Road, then we turned onto the signed Around the Lake Trail, which then becomes the Gus Johnson Trail.  Gus was a local resident who helped to clear the trail and maintain it in winter.    The route is mostly a double track around the east and south side of the lake.    We went off on a single track side loop trail to the lakeshore and then up to a residential area, following Lookout Road to Lac le Jeune Road.    We walked north past the lodge, and then finished the loop by going along Water Street to the boat launch of the campground and back to the start.    The route was about 12 km, taking about 3 hours.    

At this time of the year there was some fall color to enjoy.     We spotted lots of scats, but saw only squirrels, birds, but also a small stoat.     Most of the hike was through quiet forest, with a good hiking surface.    The Gus Johnson Trail is worth a day of hiking every year.

When snow blankets the hills in winter, we can go snowshoeing at higher elevations.     Some of the locations frequented in our area include Stake Lake, Sun Peaks, Harper Mountain, Isobel Lake, Lodgepole Lake, Lac le Jeune, and the Bush Lake – Dogwood Marshes area.   We can also snowshoe backroads and snowed-in trails, either on snowmobile tracks or breaking trail.   There is a fee required to snowshoe at stake Lake, Harper Mountain, or Sun Peaks, but not at the other areas noted above.    Getting to a parking area for trailheads has to be taken into account.    Some roads are not plowed soon after a snowfall, and some roads may require 4WD to access trailheads.   When plows clear roads, … Continue reading →

Custer Lake Loop

On a fall day I drove to the Lac le Jeune area, going along the Rossmoore Forest Service Road to a point next to a trailhead, then I hiked a known loop route on ski trails, backroads and old tracks.    I had done parts of this route on foot, on a bike and on snowshoes.    At this time of year, there were a couple of dog-walkers on area trails, but for the most part, the rest of the route was quiet.    The Resource Road had been upgraded since there was some active logging on the slopes near the firebreak.   The first 2.7 km was on the Gus Johnson Trail to the end of Lac le Jeune.   The … Continue reading →

Ross Moore Lake

One of the lakes we look forward to paddling each summer is Ross Moore Lake.    It is a longer drive into the backcountry to get to the shores of the lake.   We can use either the Long Lake Road (from Knutsford) or the McConnell Forest Service Road (from the Lac le Jeune Road) to get to the Ross Moore Lake Road, then it is an additional bumpy 8 km route to the southeast end of Ross Moore Lake.     We can launch from the dam area or we can go to the rough track into the Ross Moore Rec Site where there is a hand launch and a small campground.
