Clay Lake on the Snow

Kamloops Trails Posted on 2026-01-08 by dsmith2025-12-30

Near the end of December right before the more snow blanketed the hills, I went for a hike in the upper grasslands near McQueen Lake.   The route went into the forest on the edge of the McQueen Lake property, then around the end of Clay Lake, then looped through the forest and back through the grasslands.    I had hiked in the area another time not long before so both routes are shown here.

Clay Lake was frozen and topped with a layer of snow.

It was quiet in the area and there were very few footprints, except for deer tracks crossing my route.   Since I knew the area well, i visited 3 different homesteads, now abandoned for over 100 years.    I chose to include a route past an upland pond, a grove of mature Douglas fir trees, and some tall trees on the edge of the grasslands.   Some photos from that hike are shared here in a Google Photos album.    A link is provided here with captions added for each photo – Clay Lake on the Snow.

Also shared here are the photos in a slideshow:

This will be a spot to snowshoe once there is enough snow, usually in February.

Peterson Creek Hills Hike

Kamloops Trails Posted on 2026-01-02 by dsmith2026-01-02

On the second day of winter it was a cool, but sunny morning.    We arrived in the morning for a 3-hour hike through the Peterson Creek hills.   We started at the lower trailhead and hiked upstream to the canyon, then crossed the creek and climbed the west side of the hill, working our way to the rim, then uphill to the Tom Moore Trail.   We dropped back down to cross the creek, then followed a single track on the East Rim Trail.    Our hiking club leader took us on a series of winding trails up Tower Hill and back by different trails to the rim of the canyon.    We finished the hike by coming down the east … Continue reading →

Jacko Lake Stomp

Kamloops Trails Posted on 2025-02-03 by dsmith2025-08-09

On a mild winter day at the end of January I decided to stomp on snowshoes into Jack Lake and back.   We can drive up the gravel road in 3 seasons to kayak the lake, but there is now a gate on the access road so no one is going in to the lake.    I checked it out a week before and there were no tracks.   When I arrived back, there was a single ski track to follow. I used snowshoes since the snow was deep enough to make hiking more difficult.   The sun was peeking through the clouds off and on during the stomp in and back. The ski track was gone after about 0.5 km, then I … Continue reading →
