A Hike Around Face Lake

Kamloops Trails Posted on 2025-09-10 by dsmith2025-09-03

On a sunny summer day I drove up the Paska Lake Road and continued toward Mile High Resort.    I parked outside the resort property, and then walked to the camping area and past to the trailhead for the around-the-lake trail.   The trail is lightly marked, but at a couple of junctions, I took the one closest to the lake and continued all along the east side of Face Lake.

The area around Face Lake has lodgepole pine and douglas fir forests, with mixed forests in low or wet areas.   Some of the trees have been thinned lower down.    Higher on the slopes of Chuwhels Mountain the slopes have been logged and replanted.

At the north end of the lake there are some marshy areas but there are also some views out across the lake.

The single track trail joins backroads.     The road connects Chuwhels Lake and Greenstone Mountain to the Paska Lake Road, a rough road to drive, but fine for hiking.     There is an old BC Recreation Site right on the lake on the northwest corner of Face Lake.   It has been decommissioned mostly because the road access was so poor.     I stopped to have my break at this pleasant open spot next to the lake.

I hiked back along the backroad to where I had parked.   The Resort calls this a 3 hour hike.    I tracked it at about 7.5 km.    This loop route is a good one on a warm summer day since much of it is in the forest.  Anyone accessing the Resort property should check-in at the main office.

I have also hiked the area to the north, around Chuwhels Lake and past the series of ponds between the shoulder of Greenstone Mountain and Face Lake.
