Ross Moore Lake

Kamloops Trails Posted on 2025-01-28 by dsmith2025-08-09
Ross Moore

One of the lakes we look forward to paddling each summer is Ross Moore Lake.    It is a longer drive into the backcountry to get to the shores of the lake.   We can use either the Long Lake Road (from Knutsford) or the McConnell Forest Service Road (from the Lac le Jeune Road) to get to the Ross Moore Lake Road, then it is an additional bumpy 8 km route to the southeast end of Ross Moore Lake.     We can launch from the dam area or we can go to the rough track into the Ross Moore Rec Site where there is a hand launch and a small campground.

A paddle around the shoreline of the lake is about 3 km.    We often go around twice, once in each direction.

The lake was dammed and so some of the bays are shallow with logs or tree trunks.   On the northeast corner of the lake are the two Rocky Mountain Rangers Cabins.   Trails/rough tracks from the Lac le Jeune area come to the west and the north side of the lake.    A very rough road goes around the east side (not recommended for driving).

Ross Moore Lake

This is a popular lake for fishermen, but we all wait for the road to dry out so there are few visitors until summer.   We usually arrive on a weekday in summer and sometimes we see fly fishermen on the lake, but we rarely see anyone else.    It is a quiet spot.

The Ross Moore forest fire of 2023 burned the forests around 3 sides of the lake, but the lodgepole pines of the area will regenerate over time and it likely that there will be some logging, clearing, and reforestation in the years to come.    We will continue to enjoy Ross Moore lake each year as long as the roads are drivable.
