Custer Lake Loop

Kamloops Trails Posted on 2025-10-28 by dsmith2025-10-26

On a fall day I drove to the Lac le Jeune area, going along the Rossmoore Forest Service Road to a point next to a trailhead, then I hiked a known loop route on ski trails, backroads and old tracks.    I had done parts of this route on foot, on a bike and on snowshoes.    At this time of year, there were a couple of dog-walkers on area trails, but for the most part, the rest of the route was quiet.    The Resource Road had been upgraded since there was some active logging on the slopes near the firebreak.   The first 2.7 km was on the Gus Johnson Trail to the end of Lac le Jeune.   The trail goes around the east and south side of the lake, providing a circle loop around the lake.    Gus Johnson was a resident Lac le Jeune who had worked to keep ski trails open.   At the junction with the Resource Road, I turned east, following the upgraded double track.

In the last two outings to this area, I had gone to Fred Lake, but this time I wanted to explore Custer Lake.    I found two access routes to the scenic lake.

To finish the loop, I hiked the Ross Moore FSR, then the Sidewinder Trail.   The full loop was 9.2 km, taking almost 3 hours, with a few side trips to explore and investigate.    I spotted two other tracks for future exploration on foot or on snowshoes.

Some images from the hike are provided here.    This is an embedded Google Photos Gallery.   Click the link for the album (with more information), or watch the slideshow

Ross Moore Lake

Ross Moore

One of the lakes we look forward to paddling each summer is Ross Moore Lake.    It is a longer drive into the backcountry to get to the shores of the lake.   We can use either the Long Lake Road (from Knutsford) or the McConnell Forest Service Road (from the Lac le Jeune Road) to get to the Ross Moore Lake Road, then it is an additional bumpy 8 km route to the southeast end of Ross Moore Lake.     We can launch from the dam area or we can go to the rough track into the Ross Moore Rec Site where there is a hand launch and a small campground. A paddle around the shoreline of the lake is … Continue reading →
