On a hot summer day, I drove up the Lac le Jeune Road and turned onto the Timber Lake Road, passing under the Coquihalla Highway and parking near a junction of a road that bears west, going up into the hills. The plan was to hike a known route, one I have done on foot, on cross country skis, and on snowshoes. The first part of the hike was to go to the top of Timber Lake Hill where a tall communications tower overlooks the grasslands and forests.
There are several spots on the east side of the tower area with views looking north over the grasslands hills.
From a side route out to the top of a rocky bluff I had open views down to Timber Lake, the Coquihalla Highway, Jacko Lake, and Coal Hill.
I came back down the tower track and followed a backroad, then a lesser-traveled backroad to combine for a loop route back.
This second half of the hike was part of an old cross country ski route. The Bush Lake and Timber Lake trails were developed for the 1979 (first) BC Winter Games. We skied the trails and routes in winter as our main Nordic area until the Coquihalla Highway cut off access, but the Stake Lake Trails were then built to replace them. I spotted one of the old trail signs on an abandoned double track coming down the hill.
From this trailhead area there are many double and single tracks that link to the Outer Inks Trails, the Chuwhels Mountain Trails, and dirt bike trails. We could hike different routes in this area every day of the summer.
