Wounded Knee Hike

Kamloops Trails Posted on 2025-06-26 by dsmith2025-06-18

For decades we have been driving south to hike the Lundbom Grasslands, usually in June.    Access is through Merritt and up Highway 5C to the turn to Lundbom Lake.    We parked near the lake then hiked a 9.4 km route out toward Hamilton Lake, then up the Cocobonk Trail.    At a signed junction we continued along the Wounded Knee Trail.    There are a number of trail junctions to choose from, but for this day we followed a known route, looping back to the Cocobonk Trail and then back to Lundbom Lake.

Much of the route is in open grasslands, following old double tracks and newer single tracks through the hills to the northeast of Sugarloaf Mountain.

On the Wounded Knee Trail are hills and dales, aspen groves, pocket forests mostly on the north side of hills, ponds, glaciated ridges, eroded gullies, and unspoiled grasslands.

There are some signs on the Wounded Knee Trail, but many of the junctions require some decision-making and some navigating.    The trails are on mapping apps, helping to guide the way.

Coming down the hill on the way back we had views of Hamilton Lake, and in the distance Stoyama Mountain.

This is one of our favorite areas for a spring hike and we are already planning a different route for next year.
