Mad Dog Mountain

Kamloops Trails Posted on 2025-02-21 by dsmith2025-08-09

There are a number of fine hikes to the summits of peaks in Marble Range Provincial Park.    Among the best are Mt. Bowman,  Wild Horse Ridge, Mt. Kerr, and Lime Ridge.    But there are some lesser-known and seldom-hiked routes too.    Mad Dog Mountain is a rocky peak standing between Mt. Bowman and Lime Ridge.   There is a trail which follows Foundation Creek to the lower slopes of the mountain.    The trail is mostly used to summit the northwest end of Lime Ridge, but a marked junction to a faint trail turns north and works its way up Mad Dog Mountain.

Most of this area was burned in a forest fire in 2010.    We wound up through the black forest toward the summit.

To the northeast, Wild Horse Ridge was covered in a light snow (in mid-June).   As we climbed we had views of Mt. Bowman, Mt. Kerr, and Lime Ridge too.

From the summit, we looked west.    The Edge Hills (Provincial Park) was below, with the Fraser River Canyon in the wide trench on the other side.    Rising above farther west were the Coast Ranges (the Shulaps Range and the Camelsfoot Range), still covered in snow.

This was a steep and rough, but relatively short (7.5 km) hike.   Better hikes are noted above, but if you have done all the main hikes in the Marble Range already, Mad Dog awaits.

To get to the trailhead (N51 9.263 W121 56.092), drive west to Cache Creek, then north to Clinton.    Take the Kelly Lake Road turn and then turn north on the Jesmond Road.     Drive up this good gravel road (about 22 km) to an unmarked trailhead.    It is called Foundation Creek because there is an old house foundation next to a creek crossing.   The trail stays on the northwest side of the creek as it enters the valley and continues northwest.    Some navigation is required to do this hike.

More hikes in the Marble Range will be added over time.
