Tuktakamin Mountain Hike

Kamloops Trails Posted on 2025-02-18 by dsmith2025-08-09

When we drive from Kamloops to Vernon, we go through Falkland in the Salmon River Valley between two mountains.     The mountain on the north is Estekwalan Mountain, one of the best hikes in our region.    On the right (south side) is Tuktakamin Mountain.    It can be accessed from the Pinaus Lake Road, and 4WD vehicles can even drive to the top where there are some towers.    Hikers can drive part way up, then hike a loop route over the top of the mountain.

The trailhead is found at a sign on a tree above the road (N50 27.31 W119 35.48).    It is easy to miss on the way up.

The trail winds through the forest, then follows a series of ridges to the top.

There are several viewpoints, but the best one is looking north to Estekwalan Mountain.

At the top of the mountain are some towers and a comm shell.   There are wide views to enjoy while enjoying lunch.    The trail down can be found by traversing to the south side.    Watch for flagging tape and blazes on trees.    It drops to the road below the trailhead so we have to walk back up to wherever we parked.

The open slopes are a good place for wildflowers in late spring.     The road will be snowy, then muddy in early spring.    A good time to hike the trails is between June 15 to Oct. 15th.    Estekwalan is a better hike, but the Tuk Trail is a pleasant hike which is somewhat shorter and much easier.

Detailed description of the access and the trail can be found at the links from Salmon Arm and Vernon below:
