Greenstone Mountain Trails
On a late October day we hiked a series of trails on the northeast flank of Greenstone Mountain. There are a number of mountain bike trails winding through the forests and across ridges and gullies. The “up” trails (like Take it Easy) are gradual and wind up the slopes. The “downhill” trails are often steep, and may require technical skills on a bike. There are a number of connecting trails as well and a number of old tracks cutting across the slopes in an east-west direction, used for logging the area after a forest fire. In the last two years, many of these tracks are being decommissioned. Our plan was to hike bike trails winding up and across ridges, then come back on different trails for a loop route. We hiked the Take it Easy Trail on the edge of Cherry Creek Canyon, then crossed the Greenstone Mountain Road and traversed east on TIE, stopping at a viewpoint.

From the viewpoint/lunch spot, we had views south, looking up Greenstone Mountain, but wide views in the other directions too (see the slideshow below).

On the way back we were eclectic picking routes at trail junctions. We didn’t always pick the easiest route, but we worked our way back to the start, finishing a 7.7 km hike. We seem to take a different combination of trails each time we hike the area. The trails are mapped and hikers can navigate the trails with a good app (I use Maps.me and cyclists often use Trailforks).

We have hiked many routes on Greenstone Mountain. A YouTube video of one of them can be seen at this link – Hiking the Greenstone Hills.
